Pinterest is a great platform and it can really help your business, but there are so many misconceptions out there! Today I’m going to address them and tell you where you should focus your energy and time!

MYTH #1 PINTEREST IS A SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORM

Most people categorize Pinterest as social media, but actually it’s a search engine! It’s not in competition with Facebook or Instagram, because people go to Pinterest to actively search for something and they’re in planning mode.

It’s more like Google, actually you could call it a ‘visual Google’!

WHAT YOU SHOULD FOCUS ON

Treat Pinterest for what it is: a visual search engine. This means that you need to focus on good graphics and keywords. Doing a keyword research and then using those good keywords in strategic places is essential to have success on the platform and drive traffic to your website!

MYTH #2 MONTHLY VIEWERS ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT METRICS

I know, when you visit a Pinterest profile, monthly viewers are the first number you see. But the truth is: this is a vanity metric and it really doesn’t matter!

You could have millions of viewers just because you’re posting popular pins, but that content may not be related to your niche and you may not be getting a lot of traffic!

Of course, you may have lots of monthly viewers and lots of traffic: that’s great! But that’s still not the number you need to look at!

WHAT YOU SHOULD FOCUS ON

Concentrate on the clicks to your website!

You can check your Pinterest Analytics: select the date range and then choose ‘link clicks’ to see all the clicks to your website generated by Pinterest in that period.

You can also use Google Analytics: simply go to Acquisition > All Traffic > Referral and select the time frame. You’ll see the percentage of your traffic that comes from Pinterest.

For example, Pinterest drives more than 70% of my website traffic and that’s how I know it.

MYTH #3 PINNING MANUALLY IS BETTER THAN SCHEDULING

Some people think that pinning manually is better than using a scheduler. This may be true for other platforms, but not for Pinterest!
Whether you upload your pin from Pinterest, from your own blog or from Tailwind, it is considered fresh content by Pinterest!

WHAT YOU SHOULD FOCUS ON

If you’re serious about Pinterest marketing, you know that you need to pin many times per day and that’s simply impossible to do without a scheduler.

Tailwind makes it very easy, because it detects automatically the best time to pin, based on when your audience is most active on the platform. Amazing, isn’t it?

MYTH #4 CONSISTENCY IS NOT RELEVANT

Are you just pinning when you publish a new blog post? No worries, I’ve been there!

The thing is, consistency is essential on Pinterest and if you’re just pinning a few of your pins once a week and nothing else the rest of the time, you’re missing out on huge opportunities!

WHAT YOU SHOULD FOCUS ON

Pinterest has stated many times that you really need to be consistent in order to get the best results.

This means pinning your content and other people’s content many times a day. How often? It really depends on how much content you have, but I’d suggest between 8-20 times per day. As you can imagine, it can be quite time consuming, that’s why I use Tailwind for all of my clients and for my account.

Tailwind is the best option out there, and I can’t recommend it enough!

MYTH #5 THERE AREN’T MANY PEOPLE ON PINTEREST

Pinterest has 463 million monthly users. It’s a growing platform and your content can be found for years to come.

WHAT YOU SHOULD FOCUS ON

Create relevant, evergreen content and your audience will be able to find it in the future. It’s an investment that will pay off for years!

MYTH #6 PINTEREST IS ONLY FOR RECIPES

Sure, recipes are a big niche on Pinterest, no doubt about it! But things have changed since Pinterest was born! Now there are some many niches that can be successful on this platform.

A few examples? Photography, home decor, travel, marketing, coaching, health and fitness, motherhood, crafts, celebrations, web design and branding to name a few.

WHAT YOU SHOULD FOCUS ON

In this case, it really depends on your niche. Do some market research and find out what your audience is interested in, and then go and create some boards for them!

MYTH #7 PINTEREST IS TIME CONSUMING

Well, of course you could spend hours creating graphics, doing keyword research and scheduling everything, but when you learn how to manage Pinterest you can get it done in less than 3 hours per week!

WHAT YOU SHOULD FOCUS ON

If you want to be time efficient, you probably guessed it, you need to use a scheduler, and as I said before, Tailwind is the very best out there. Why? Apart from scheduling pins, it has so many other amazing features that will make you save tons of time!

MYTH #8 PINTEREST ISN’T WORKING FOR ME

Some people try Pinterest for a month and then give up because they don’t see results. Well, there are so many things to take into consideration: your niche, your audience, the time of the year, your product or service, etc…

Pinterest is a slow burner, so if you’re looking for an overnight success, this is not your platform.

WHAT YOU SHOULD FOCUS ON

With the right strategies, with consistency and patience, you’re going to see traffic coming to your website and new leads for your business.

Focus on finding the right keywords, create beautiful graphics and be consistent on the platform, and you’ll see traffic sooner than you think!

MYTH #9 PINTEREST IS COMPLICATED

You need a strategy, you can’t just pin some graphics at random. There are some things to take into consideration and you need to know what to focus on.

But once you’ve mastered the basics, you can absolutely do it!

WHAT YOU SHOULD FOCUS ON

Learn the basics about Pinterest: in this way, you’ll have a weekly process to implement and Pinterest will get you traffic and leads on autopilot.
