PINTEREST MARKETING FOR BEGINNERS

Many of you realize the importance of Pinterest. Having all of your eggs in one basket is never a good idea and relying only on the Instagram algorithm is not great.

Sure, you can invest in email marketing, but how do you get people on your email list in the first place?

Pinterest and Google are two great places because people are actively looking for something specific. And did you know that being on Pinterest also helps you to rank on Google? 

So here are a few steps you can take if you’re starting out on Pinterest.

There are many more things you could do, but this is a great way to get the basics covered, so you can start to get some traffic to your website from Pinterest.

1. CREATE A BUSINESS ACCOUNT 

This is an important step to take if you’re a business. It’s required by Pinterest to have a business account if you’re a business and you’ll also have access to analytics and promoted pins (Pinterest Ads). 

2. CLAIM YOUR WEBSITE

You’ll need to claim your website so you can monitor your analytics.

3. KEYWORD RESEARCH

Pinterest is based on SEO, so it’s crucial to know which keywords your audience is searching for, so you can appear on those search results.

First of all, brainstorm all of the words that your target audience is typing when it comes to your products or services. Then think about any questions they might have that relate to your brand.

For example, if you’re a vegan food blogger, they might be looking for ‘easy vegan breakfast recipes’ and they might have questions about gluten free bread options.
The next step would be to actually go to Pinterest and type the keywords: look for what comes up on the search bar and the keywords that appear on the pins.

Then write them down on a Google doc or spreadsheet.

Once you’ve got the keywords, it’s time to apply them to all the relevant places. Start with your profile name, profile description and your cover image.

4. CREATE RELEVANT BOARDS

Start simple. I’d start with eight boards that are relevant to your brand and the main topics you’re talking about.

For example, if you’re a website designer, you could have a board called ‘Branding inspiration’, another called ‘Marketing tips’, and ‘Color Palettes’.

Remember to include relevant keywords in your board name and description.

5. DESIGN TEMPLATES AND PINS

Having beautiful designs is great, but not enough. You ideally want to have some pins that are clean, clear and easy to read. Consider your branding (colors, fonts, illustrations) and create some templates. You can use Photoshop or Canva for this.

Once you’ve got at least 4 or 5 templates, it’s time to create some pins! If you need some tips on how to create great Pinterest graphics, you can find them here.

And don’t forget to add keywords in the text overlay (Pinterest reads them there as well).

6. SCHEDULE SOME PINS

You can use a scheduler if you want to, I recommend Tailwind and they now have a free plan. But you can also schedule directly from Pinterest if you prefer. You just need to upload the image, add the keyword-rich title, the keyword-rich description, select the URL and the board you want to pin it to, and then click on ‘Schedule’ instead of ‘Publish now’.

Just start with one pin a day. Down the road, you’ll want to add Idea Pins, Video Pins and schedule more than one pin per day, but at the beginning, just start with the basics so you can get the ball rolling and begin to get some traffic to your website!
