Are you promoting your blog on Pinterest? Well, you’ve certainly made a good decision! With over 265 million active users searching for ideas, it is THE place to be!
Remember that people on Pinterest are not just scrolling down on their feed, they’re looking for something specific, so you’ve got to create a great pin to get their attention!
There are a few factors to take into consideration when creating a pin to promote your blog post. First of all, you need to make sure you’re offering great value with your content. This should go without saying, but if you get people on your website, you have to offer the best you have, so they’re going to keep browsing and eventually they’ll be more keen to subscribe to your newsletter, buy your product or hire you for your services.
Here’s what you should always consider when creating a pin.
1. KEYWORDS
Pinterest is a search engine, so having great keywords is not only important, it’s essential! Make sure you search for keywords BEFORE writing your blog post: then include those keywords in your blog post title, in your first paragraph and throughout your article.
Then it’s time to add those keywords in your pin description, in your hashtags, in the file name, and in the text overlay of your pin graphics.
Do you want to know where to find those keywords? Have a look at this post which is all about Pinterest SEO.
2. PIN DESIGN
Awesome! With the right keywords people found you, now we need to make sure that our pin attracts the attention of our ideal audience!
First of all, make sure you’re using high quality photos. If you’re selling a product, hire a professional photographer (unless you’re one), it will make all the difference! If you’re offering a service you can find great stock photos on Creative Market.
Pinterest recommends vertical images with a 2:3 ratio. You should also have clear text (remember that 80% of people use Pinterest on mobile) and add your website or logo.
Try to stick with the same colors and the same fonts, so people will eventually recognize your brand.

3. WHERE TO PIN
Whether you’re pinning from your website, directly on Pinterest or using Tailwind, you’ll always have to choose the first board to pin to. I used to pin on my ‘best of’ board all the time, until I realised that sometimes it wasn’t the most relevant.
Now I always pin on the most relevant board first, whether or not it’s my ‘best of’. Also, it’s always one of my personal boards, not group boards.
I schedule directly from Tailwind so I can choose immediately the boards and the time frame that goes between the publication of the pins.
After the most relevant board, I’ll choose some more personal boards where the pin can be added, and then I’ll insert some group boards, usually with a 24 hour interval.
I’ll then add my pin to Tailwind Tribes and I’ll make sure to share other people’s content as well.
4. HOW TO PROMOTE IT
So now your pin has been published on Pinterest, but where else can you promote it?
- On your blog, make sure to add share buttons!
- On your blog post, invite people to pin your image!
- In your newsletter, you can say ‘No time to read the post now? Pin it for later’.
- If you want, you can also promote it on Facebook groups on specific threads (if allowed).
- If you have the ‘swipe up’ feature on Instagram, you can say ‘swipe up to pin’.
Now I want to hear your thoughts! Was this useful for you?
